He was motivated by African American journalists such as Ed Bradley, Bernard Shaw, and Dwight Lauderdale when he was a child to pursue a career in journalism. Shortly after graduating from the University of Miami, Joshua started his broadcasting career in public radio, where he worked from 2004 to 2010 for a collaborative project between WLRN and the Miami Herald.
In 2010, Johnson moved to San Francisco to work as a morning newscaster for KQED, an NPR station, where he stayed until early 2016. In 2016, Joshua hosted the radio series Truth Be Told, produced by KQED and distributed by Public Radio International. Truth Be Told dealt with race issues in America, and four episodes were broadcast nationally.
Johnson has also worked as a substitute host on KQED’s Forum and taught podcasting classes at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Johnson guest-hosted The Diane Rehm Show for two days in September 2016, and Rehm announced Johnson would be taking over her time slot in November.
From 2017 through 2019, Johnson was the host of 1A, which was distributed by NPR. In late 2019, he declared that he would be leaving 1A on December 20 to join MSNBC as an anchor in 2020.
